An early goal from Naeemah Bu Hani was enough to secure a narrow 1-0 win for Algeria over Jordan in the friendly test match that was held on Friday, June 16, at the Petra Training Field in Amman.
The match comes as part of the first phase of preparations for the upcoming 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which is also considered as the qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019.
Head coach Michael Dickey lead the Jordanian Team from the touchline for the first time since arriving to take on the Jordanian National Team coaching post, in his first official game in charge of the team.
The match kicked off with both sides trying to control play and dictate the midfield. An early goal in the fifth minute from Algeria’s Naeemah Bu Hani saw her chip the ball over the goalie from inside the penalty box, giving Algeria the lead. Algeria took control of possession after the goal, as the Jordanians withdrawn to the back. Dickey reacted quickly by making two substitutions at the half-hour mark by fielding center-back Ayah Al Majali and a left-winger Shahnaz Jibreen. Another substitution was made in the 40th minute with striker Maysa Jbarah in for Abeer Al Nahar.
The National Team kept on making efforts to reach the Algerian goal, with most attacks coming from the right side, but it lacked effectiveness as the Algerians worked well on closing down the spaces with an organized defense line.
In the second half, the National Team stepped their game up, going forward and pressing the opposition with the attempt to steal the ball from the opponent’s area. A number of chances were created, but the Algerians stood strong in front of their goal. Dickey made three more substitutions to improve midfield and attack. However, Algeria managed to keep their sheets clean until the final whistle.
The two teams will meet up again on Monday, June 19, for a rematch as Jordan aims for a win, while Algeria will be looking to record another positive result against the hosts in preparation for the qualifiers of the African Women’s Cup of Nations 2018.
